Research Assistant
The Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University is currently seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our team and work with Dr Chris Whitman and colleagues on a funded EPSRC Place Based Impact Accelerator Account project “O Llaith i Gynnes” (From Damp to Warm) which aims to demonstrate how solid masonry walled dwellings of rural Wales, a region of very severe exposure to wind-driven rain, can provide resilient, comfortable, low carbon homes fit for the 21st century. The project is in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Engineering, Carmarthenshire County Council, The Tywi Centre and the South-west Wales Regional Energy Team. This RA post will focus on implementing detailed and rigorous baseline scientific performance monitoring and evaluation of a farmhouse owned by Carmarthenshire County Council, and exploring innovative representation of the data for a range of end users.
The ideal RA candidate will hold a degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience (essential) and a postgraduate degree at PhD level (or in later stages of postgraduate research study) (desirable) in a relevant subject area such as Architecture, Building Physics, Environmental Engineering, Surveying or any related field. They will have knowledge of building performance monitoring, ideally with an interest in buildings of traditional construction. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. The RA will be well versed in graphic skills, and exhibit creativity and innovation in data representation, suitable for educational users, policy makers, homeowners and the wider public.

This part-time position (20 hours per week) is available in October 2026 and is fixed term for 4 months and your contract will end no later than 26 March 2027.

Salary: £33,951 - £36,636 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 5)
